Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence (AI), entails the development of algorithms that allow computer systems to learn from data and improve their performance over time without explicit programming. It serves as a formidable solution for addressing intricate issues across numerous sectors. 

In finance, machine learning algorithms analyse vast datasets to detect patterns and make predictions for stock market trends or risk management. 

In healthcare, they assist in diagnosing diseases, predicting patient outcomes, and discovering new treatments. 

In transportation, machine learning optimizes route planning, traffic management, and autonomous vehicle navigation. 

Its applications extend across various industries, demonstrating its versatility and effectiveness in tackling complex challenges and driving innovation.

Machine learning started in the 1940s and 1950s when scientists started using computers to solve problems and make decisions. At first, they used simple algorithms for tasks like sorting, classification, and clustering things. But as technology got better and we had more data, machine learning got more advanced and could do more complicated stuff.

Artificial neural networks, inspired by the human brain as conceptualized by Pitts and McCulloch in 1943, mimic the brain's interconnected neurons to process information. These networks consist of layers of neurons that work together to handle different tasks, similar to various regions of the brain. By inputting data and adjusting internal connections through training, artificial neural networks can learn from examples and improve their performance over time. They have become crucial tools in fields such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, enabling tasks like image recognition, speech processing, and medical diagnosis.

Alan Turing's Turing Test (1950) is a benchmark for machine intelligence.

Alan Turing, a brilliant scientist and cryptographer, created something called the Turing Test in 1950 to check if a computer can think like a human. In this test, a person talks to a computer and another person without knowing which is which. If the person can't tell which one is the computer, then the computer is said to be intelligent. The Turing Test is like a challenge for computers to show how smart they are, just like people. It helps us understand how well computers can understand and respond to human conversation.

In the 1950s, a big step in machine learning happened with the creation of the perceptron algorithm. This was the first time a computer program could learn from information, and it helped recognize simple patterns. After this, more algorithms like decision trees and artificial neural networks were made, making machine learning even better.

In the 1980s and 1990s, machine learning became more popular. This happened because better algorithms were made and more data was available. Also, with big computers and advanced algorithms like Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Machines, and Support Vector Machines, machine learning became even more powerful. 

In the 1990s to 2000s, there was a big change in how things were done – a move towards using data more than before. Instead of just guessing or using old methods, people started relying on data to make decisions and solve problems. This shift towards data-driven approaches meant that decisions were based on facts and information, making them more accurate and reliable. With the increasing availability of computers and technology, along with new ways to collect and analyze data, this approach became even more popular and powerful. It helped businesses, governments, and researchers make better choices and understand things in new and better ways.

Since the year 2000, progress and schemes have been made in machine learning and continue to define it. Most notably, deep learning has emerged as a specialization of machine learning. It employs artificial neural networks comprising many layers for data assimilation. Therefore, there have been major breakthroughs in such fields as the analysis of voice together with image, self-driving vehicles and language processing. Another trend is making algorithms that learn through their actions and the outcomes they get. Actions involve selecting or choosing the decision from many possible decisions based on something and feedback involves getting a reward or punishment depending on the choice made. This is what most people refer to as reinforcement learning. Reinforcement learning has been used in different applications including game playing, robotics, and recommendation systems. 

Moreover, explainable AI has become a thing whereby a model is built with capabilities that allow it to give clear explanations for why it came up with certain answers leading to more confidence in them. This is because when these models make decisions they use logic which produces very sensible results. The democratization of machine learning tools and platforms has finally made them more accessible to a wider range of users, allowing individuals and organizations to utilize machine learning in diverse applications and thereby empowering them.

Nowadays, machine learning is used in many different industries to solve difficult problems.
